Reginald Aspinwall (1858 - 1921)

Fleetwood Museum

circa 1905

The painting depicts Heysham Head, a prominent landmark on the coast just south of Morecambe, and the sea shore looking south towards Sunderland Bank and the Lune Estuary. The beautiful shoreline belies the great dangers to the unwary of treacherous quicksands, deep gullies and fast moving tides. The bay is the ideal enviroment for shell fish and is historically associated with the traditional local occupations of mussel and cockle gathering.
