Turner's depiction of Iffley Mill is an important representation of this historically significant building. The village of Iffley lies just two miles downstream from Oxford. The mill was built in the 11th century and stood until it burnt down in 1908. During the 19th century its profitability declined and the mill fell into disrepair. This gradual decay enhanced its picturesque qualities and it became a popular subject for local artists.
