Luke Fildes (1844 - 1927)

Tate Collection

circa 1860-1920

6 preparatory drawings and sketches for 'The Doctor' (exh. RA 1891), one of the artist's best-known works. Set in a humble dwelling, it shows a mortally ill child attended by a concerned physician with the distraught parents in the background. The sombre pathos of this work sparked an enormous popular response, and the engraving after it was published by Agnew in 1892 was extremely successful.

Comment

  • i have a drawing or sketching signed by samuel luke fildes. there is a newspaper in the back of the painting from the british area dated november 1912. it looks like one of his sketchings. i checked and rechecked the letters in the words that says this was painted by him, and the letters are just alittle bit different in shades and sizes. i have to wonder if he actually did this one.tjs195450
