John Chubb (1746 - 1818)

Blake Museum

circa 1760 - circa 1820

Collection of amateur works by John Chubb of Bridgewater, a merchant and later Mayor and a magistrate of the town. Includes a series of portraits of local people, from MPs to a butcher, poulterer and innkeeper's servant - normal people who would not have commissioned a professional portrait, and whom Chubb had no need to flatter. The portraits are also an important record of costume, tools, furniture and local scenery of the period. A small number of works in the collection are thought to be by his grandsons.
