René Magritte (1898 - 1967)

British Museum

1936

The drawing depicts a leaf shaped tree by a stream. The tree's foliage has been replaced by rows of bricks. On one side of the stream is a curtain and on the other a canon ball, both on a grassy ground. This drawing relates to a group of paintings all titled La Geante, the first of which is dated 1935. In only one of these the artist replaced the vegetative structure of the tree's foliage with bricks, as he does for the drawing. René Magritte was one of the most important Belgian Surrealist artists.
