Sir William Allan (1782 - 1850)

King's Museum

1826

This painting is based upon the lines of the poem Auld Robin Gray written in 1771 by Lady Anne Lindsay and is a prime example of Allan at the height of his historical painting. Set in a humble domestic setting Robin Gray is seated on the right with his dog whilst on the left stand Jennie and her family. Just as the poem states, Jennie's father urges her to accept Gray's proposal while her sombre mother studies her daughters resigned contemplation the moment before her father gives away her hand.
