George Romney (1734 - 1802)

Falmouth Art Gallery

1784

Half-length portrait. A characteristic, polished work of the 1780s, perhaps the period when Romney was enjoying his reputation as a society portraitist to the full. The numerous recorded sittings that Lord Falmouth gave to Romney suggest two portraits were produced, and the timing of the commission suggests that it was for a marriage pair (although no companion portrait of his wife Anne Crewe is known).
