The work illustrates Thomas Campbell's poem of the same name, published in 1823. It corresponds closely with the four stanzes which accompanied the work when exhibited in 1833 beginning 'The sun has a sickly glare, The earth with age was wan, The skeleton of nations were, Around that lovely man...'.
