attributed to Cosimo Tura (circa 1430 - 1495)

British Museum

This drawing is exactly the reverse of the Infant Christ in the picture of the Madonna and Child by Tura in the Accademia Carrara at Bergamo. Even the folds of the drapery over the back of the throne are identical. The most obvious explanation of the drawing being in reverse to the picture would be that it was not a drawing but a woodcut from the picture. It has, in fact, some resemblance to the appearance and character of a woodcut. The issue demands further investigation. This work was bequeathed by Henry Oppenheimer, who presented over 30 works to the British Museum through the Art Fund between 1907 and 1933.
