Adolph Menzel (1815 - 1905)

Barber Institute of Fine Arts

1884

This work shows the artist wrestling to define the poses of both the male and female figures in his gouache 'Contribution' of 1885, now in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin. This is a sensitive and intricate work and the study of the woman in particular reveals a delicacy and refinement far beyond the usual preparatory study.
