Samuel Palmer (1805 - 1881)

Fitzwilliam Museum

circa 1834-1835

Previously thought to represent Chaldon Down in Dorset, but now thought to be a view in Devon. The artist's son, A H Palmer, wrote of the effect the scenery of south west England had upon his father which 'even before he had explored it, seems to have commended itself to my father's affections, and afterwards became his ideal of English scenery.' This work fully does justice to Palmer's talents both as a visionary follower of Blake and as a highly accomplished landscape painter.
