Description:
It depicts a dead soldier from the Boer War with his faithful horse standing guard over his body. There is no sentimentality but an identification with the horse's plight. The picture is in portrait form and this, with the tight trapezoid form of horse and rider, emphasises the isolation of the figures in the vast expanse of the veldt.
