Presented by The Art Fund in honour of Sir Brinsley Ford. This scene depicts the moment when Jesus called Matthew to be his disciple. Matthew sits weighing the gold coins while Jesus and probably Peter stand before him bidding him to leave his work for a higher calling. One of Domenico's special effects is to highlight the central figures by leaving the paper bare on the areas of their robes so that they stand out as if enhance with bodycolour.
