Degas visited Italy in 1858-59 and made many studies after both sculptures and paintings. Donatello's bronze David in in the Bargello in Florence. The verso depicts a study of a horse's head perhaps after a classical sculpture like the flying Horses of Tarquinia and a study of the neck and shoulder of a male. A drawing from a collection of works which also includes studies of nudes, dancers, horses, and portrait studies of Therese Degas and Jules Perrot Debal.
