Francis Towne (1740 - 1816)

Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Museum

1786

This is one of the larger drawings from the artist's visit to the Lake District in August 1786. The view depicts Loughrigg on the left, Red Bank in the centre, and to the right Silver Howe, the mountain that dominates the west side of Grasmere. In the middle distance, below Red Bank, is the area called White Moss. On the right hand side is the old road which travels from the White Moss quarry over to Dove Cottage itself.
