The group portrait depicts Joseph Banks (1743-1820) and Dr Daniel Solander (1736-1782), who travelled together as naturalists on Captain Cook's first voyage to the South Pacific in 1768. They are accompanied by the Tahitian Omai (circa 1753-circa 1776) who was their charge after his arrival in England in 1774. Joint acquisition by the National Portrait Gallery and the National Museum Wales.
