A Mediterranean harbour is seen in the early evening, the setting sun casting strong shadows as its light strikes a fortified round tower. In the shallows to the left, oyster gatherers are filling a barrel with their catch. In the centre foreground, two standing figures, who may be Eastern merchants, are in mid-discussion.
