Richard T Lonsdale (1826 - 1849)

Judges' Lodgings

1843 - 1844

Lonsdale was a painter of genre subjects and landscapes. His domestic interiors are characterised by a meticulous technique inspired by Dutch genre painting of the 17th century. This painting is particularly interesting in that it accurately depicts, on a large scale, the drawing room of Whittington Hall shortly after it was completed in 1836. More importantly, it is a unique record of a room splendidly furnished by the well-known cabinet-making firm of Gillows of Lancaster
