Marcellus Laroon (1679 - 1772)

Tate Collection

1679 - 1772

An interior with two men and two women seated at a table, drinking and smoking. Another woman is standing on the right; a man on the left is drawing a cork. The work is in grey-brown ground with notes of colour and highlights. Marcellus was the son of 'old Laroon', a Dutch painter who came to England and was employed by Kneller to paint his draperies. John Marcellus was born here, became an actor, then a soldier and finally an artist. A contemporary of Hogarth, he also excelled in domestic groups of figures.
