Anish Kapoor (born 1954)

Cartwright Hall Art Gallery

1995, cast 1997

Its title implies anarchy and chaos, yet its appearance is still and serene. A smooth, shimmering sphere, it calls to mind a cosmic symbol and inhabits a realm at once timeless and eternal. The indentation in the centre of the sphere resembles a navel depression and in Hindu creation-myths, Vishnu is depicted asleep with a burgeoning lotus emanating from his navel. Kapoor subtly combines Hindu elements with those of a more universal nature.
