This work was commissioned by the 5th Earl of Essex as part of a larger commission to paint interior and exterior views of Cassiobury House, the Essex family seat in Watford, as well as the park and estate cottages. The Winter Dining Room is depicted in its heyday with the richest colours and minute attention to detail. It illustrates the elegant panelled room with its ancestral portraits, stained-glass windows, swagged drapes and elaborate furniture.
