Stanhope Alexander Forbes (1857 - 1947)

Royal Cornwall Museum

1904

This is an interesting preparatory study for the painting The Seine Boat and illustrates the artist's skill in producing finely-observed character details by concentrating on a few figures seen from close range. The bearded old man, known as Uncle William, occurs in several of Forbes's works. The subject had importance for the museum's education work on the Cornish fishing industry as it depicts a Seine boat, used for pilchard fishing until 1920.
