John, 4th Marquess of Tweeddale died 1762. The fourth Marquess was bred to the law and appointed an Extraordinary Lord of Session in 1721. He was principal keeper of His Majesty's signet for a time and was appointed Lord Justice General and governor of the Bank of Scotland in 1761. He also developed the family estates at Yester by enclosing fields and planting timber.
