John Maltby (born 1936)

Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery

1994

Norwich Castle Museum holds the largest and most comprehensive collection of British ceramic teapots in the world, spanning the period from the early eighteenth century to the present day and including a growing number of pieces by contemporary makers. The four makers represented by this purchase illustrate several important aspects of craft ceramics at the time. The teapot by Maltby is functional as he specialises in domestic pottery. Maltby began his career as a painter and sculptor, as the decoration on this pot illustrates. This is one of a group of four teapots. All four makers are of international reputation and their teapots were outstanding additions to the collection at Norwich Castle Museum.
