Ambrosius Holbein (circa 1494 - circa 1519)

British Museum

circa 1518

1) Portrait of a Young Man, originally attributed to Hans Holbein the Younger, now however it is given instead to his tragically short-lived older brother, Ambrosius. As this work reveals, Ambrosius treats his portraits with great sensitivity and refinement. Presumably this piece was intended to be a finished work of art rather than a study for a painting. 2) Design with images of Lot and his Daughters, Intoxication of Noah and Judith and Holofernes in a Renaissance frame.

  • Medium: 1) brush drawing in grey & black wash, touched with red chalk & pen & brown ink; 2) Indian ink on a dark background heightened with white chalk
  • Dimensions: 1) 14.8 x 12.2cm
  • Art Fund Grant: £800 ( Total: £800)
  • ArtFunded in: 1926
