Jacques Andre Portail (1695 - 1759)

British Museum

1695 - 1759

This drawing depicts a young artist, probably an aristocratic amateur, seated in the act of drawing. It is a charming example of a rather rare 18th century French draughtsman, not previously represented in the British Museum. This work was donated by Henry Oppenheimer, who presented over 30 works to the British Museum through the Art Fund between 1907 and 1933.
