Angelica Kauffman (1741 - 1807)

Scottish National Portrait Gallery

1785

Half-length portrait of Sir James Hall (1761-1832) painted in Rome during Hall's scientific study trip. The portrait shows the young scientist neatly but not extravagantly dressed, his hair arranged fashionably but not foppishly. The most striking aspect of the portrait is his expression of concentration and thought. It is the portrait of a young man of genius who, in the next few years, was to help revolutionise geological studies.
