Description:
This work is an key work in the Pop aesthetic of British art and it exemplifies certain major preoccupations of the Independent Group, of which Hamilton was a central figure. The Independent Group reacted against a number of the prevailing tendencies of British art of the post-war period, and looked to American imagery in the mass media for inspiration. This work depicts a motor showroom and the picture is heavily influenced by the imagery of large gleaming American cars, whose styling was an important topic of Independent Group discussions.
