Peter Paul Rubens (1577 - 1640)

Ashmolean Museum

circa 1629 - 1630

Thomas Howard, 2nd Earl of Arundel (1585-1646) was one of the leading members of Charles I's 'Whitehall' group of connoisseurs and collectors. During his English sojourn Rubens visited and highly praised the Earl's collection. As a result of their meeting, Rubens made three painted portraits and this study. The rapport felt by the artist and sitter is immediately apparent in this unusually informal study. This work was acquired with assistance from the Wolfson Foundation.
