Rubens had known and admired Thomas Howard, 2nd Earl of Arundel (1585-1646) as a great collector long before they met and had painted the Countess of Arundel and her entourage on their passage through Antwerp in 1620. The rapport felt by the artist and sitter is immediately apparent in this unusually informal study.
