Description:
This painting was the inspiration for Wordsworth's 'Elegiac Stanzas', written after the death of his brother John at sea in 1805. It was Sir George's donation of a major part of his collection to the nation that was to have a decisive effect on the creation of a National Gallery. The small version of this picture was originally given to Mary Wordsworth because of its inspiration of Wordsworth's poem, but was later retrieved by Sir George's wife.
