Provenance:
Commissioned by the 4th Earl of Bristol in Rome, in the artist's studio 1780; by descent.

Description:
This scene, bathed in a Claudian cool early morning light with a misty haze, is typically decorative and idealised. More moved to Rome in the early 1770s and remained in Italy for the rest of his life. He specialised in painting 'ideal' landscapes for Grand Tourists and Italians alike.
