Bacchiacca (1494 - 1557)

York Art Gallery

1515 - 1557

This strange and melancholy landscape painting shows Christ in the centre of the Garden of Gethsemane on the eve of his crucifixion. An angel appears bearing a chalice on a cloud to His left and the Apostles lie sleeping in the foreground. In the middle distance to the right of the painting, Judas tells the priests where Christ is and soldiers approach to take him prisoner. This painting was part of a collection of 117 works belonging to the industrialist and engineer F.D. Lycett Green and bequeathed to York through the Art Fund, in 1955, in recognition of the remarkable efforts made after the Second World War by its curator to transform it into a gallery of international importance.
