A charming and lively landscape depicting cattle watering at the edge of a wood. This work was originally attributed to Constable and is an example of the following Constable attracted after his death. It is now thought that Edward Fitzgerald sold off his original by Constable and commissioned his friend, Thomas Churchyard to paint a substitute. The original has not been traced.

Provenance

Edward Fitzgerald; Part of the E E Cook collection, grandson of Thomas Cook of Thomas Cook Travel Agency. Died in 1955 and bequeathed the entire contents of his house at Bath to the National Art Collections Fund.
