in the style of Thomas Hearne (1744 - 1817)

Ashmolean Museum

1778

This watercolour was engraved in 1778 for the Antiquities of Great Britain. The subject, with its vivid portrayal of a squall of wind and rain, is remarkable as an early attempt to impart mood to a landscape by an uncommon weather effect, and was doubtless one of the contemporary works which contributed to Turner's development. This work was originally attributed to William Byrne. Part of nine gifts to six museums by Victor Rienaecker through the Art Fund between 1923 and 1928.
