Sir Edward Burne-Jones (1833 - 1898)

Tate Collection

1862

A woman in a long loose white gown, with long light brown hair, attempts to escape up some stairs. Her head is turned towards the spectator with an expression of fear and her right arm is raised, holding on to the wall. She is held back by a long cord fastened to the wall, the other end held by Queen Eleanor, a figure in a black gown over a crimson dress. In the centre, we see a dark chamber with a light glimmering in a hanging lamp.
