Lydia Lopokova (1892-1981) was one of the most popular dancers of the Ballets Russes under Diaghilev and toured Europe and the United States. When Diaghiliv died in 1927 she came out of retirement to help the embryonic English ballet companies. She married the economist Maynard Keynes in 1925 and together they were great enthusiasts of the Council for the Encouragement of Music and Arts which then developed into the Arts Council.
