Half length portrait seated before an easel, the sitter is wearing a brocaded dressing-gown and a turban, holding a palette and brushes in his left hand and a brush in his right hand. Executed in Rome when Wilson was working there from 1749-1755.

Provenance

Mengs painted the protrait as a tribute to Wilson and in return for one of his landscapes. Wilson parted with the portrait to his kinsman Sir Watkin Williams Wynn.
