Leon Underwood (1890 - 1975)

The Minories

1924 - 1925

This sculpture joined a small permanent collection of works by modern British artists in the Victor Batte-Lay Trust Collection for The Minories Gallery, Colchester. Sculpture was only one of many art forms that Underwood attempted during his long and restless career. The present piece was an early experiment. It was conceived conventionally as a plaster model to be cast in bronze, but the result failed to satisfy him and he began a long and laborious process of chasing, accentuating the double twist of the body and seeking to create a sense of movement through the play of surface light. It is said that Frank Dobson found him at work and chided him for the amount of effort involved.
