Probably listed as one lot in the inventory of Rubens' effects after his death in 1640; said to have been given by the Duke of Bavaria to the Duc d'Albery, from whom purchased by Lord Belper between 1817 and 1821; by descent in the Belper family at Kindston Hall, Derby until sold Sotheby's 18 Nov 1959 lot 33; Bought by Hanson Estate in 1959.

Description:
Study for the head of Caspar in The Adoration of the Magi, the centre panel of the triptych commissioned from Rubens for the church of S. Jean, Malines.
