Craigie Aitchison (1926-2009)

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum

1988 - 1989

This painting is one of a series on the theme of the Crucifixion that has preoccupied that artist since 1987. Aitchinson's grandfather was a minister in Scotland and the family's involvement with the church, together with the Scottish landscape, have both been crucial influences on the artist. The inclusion of a bird in this controlled composition conveys a personal quality of response to the tragedy of the Passion.
