Chiswick House was built in 1727-9 for Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington (1694-1753), to his specification that it should integrate the architecture, landscape, furniture and decoration of the Palladian era in England. Chiswick House is trying to refurnish the building as it was at the time of Lord Burlington's death. This chair, one from a set of twelve recorded in the 1770 inventory of the Gallery at Chiswick, has been attributed to the revered architect-artist William Kent. He had first-hand knowledge of modern Italian art and design and displayed this in his work at Chiswick. The chair is of a unique design not repeated for any other house designed under Kent's influence.
