Jan Fyt (1611 - 1661)

Temple Newsam House

1648 - 1650

Fyt was born in Antwerp, visiting Italy in his early twenties. He specialised in still life and hunting scenes. Other versions of this particular composition are in the Alte Pinakotek, Munich, and in Geneva. This is a major work which has been at Temple Newsam since the 1760s. In 1854, Dr. Waagen characterised it as 'a spirited chef-d'oeuvre of this excellent master'. It hung on one of the long south walls and is documented there in old photographs.
