Anne Seymour Damer (1749 - 1828)

Ranger's House

1814

This impressive bust is of the ill-fated consort of George IV when Princess of Wales. Seymour Damer was virtually the only British sculptress of note before the 20th century, even if Walpole's praise of her as the equal of Bernini and the great sculptors of antiquity is extravagant. She was a personal friend of the Princess of Wales, and the present bust was done from life. It is a good example of her late style, combining forceful characterisation with a pure neo-classical treatment of form.
