Provenance:
Probably given to sitter's parents by Joan Severn, Ruskin's cousin, after his death; thence by family descent.

Description:
Ruskin met the sitter in 1858 and fell in love with her. They had an unhappy relationship which lasted the whole of his later life. Portrait drawings by Ruskin are rare. 1) Oval, 41.8 x 34.2 cm. 2) 48.6 x 33.4 cm. 3) 39 x 27 cm, c.1860.
