This is one of four Old Master drawing purchased by the Art Fund and presented to the Walker. The drawings come from the famous collection at Ince Blundell in Lancashire and this work belonged previously to the Liverpool Connoisseur William Roscoe. Roscoe's collection of old master paintings is already in the collection of the Walker Art Gallery. Roscoe was forced to sell his collection in 1816 due to bankruptcy and a large numbers of prints were bought by Charles Robert Blundell, the son of Henry Blundell who had laid the foundations of the Ince Blundell collection with extensive purchases of classical sculpture and paintings. Many of his sculptures are now in the Liverpool Museum.
