attributed to Herman Scheerree (active1380 - 1430)

British Library

1420

This miniature is one of the finest English works of art of its kind. The style is International Gothic, sophisticated and elegant, yet nevertheless capable of intense spirituality, as in the present case. The chief exponent of the English version of International Gothic was Herman Scheerre, probably of Rhenish origin but apparently established in London with an atelier. The miniature is believed to have originally faced the beginning of the consecration prayer in a missal, or Mass book, and incarnates the meditative mysticism of the end of the Middle Ages.
