Description:
This important group of twenty-five drawings by a master of the High Baroque belongs to the later years of the artist's activity in Rome. More than half of the drawings have been identified as studies for works in churches in Rome and Rieti or in galleries and collections. We can be pretty certain that the drawings have been kept together ever since they left the artist's studio. There were already three drawings by Gaulli in the Ashmolean Museum and the acquisition of this group now makes the Oxford collection the largest and the most representative of the artist's drawings in the country.
