Carving of St Paul

English

The Bridewell

late 14th Century

Carving of St Paul carrying a sword and a book. It was discovered during the demolition of an old cottage at Bergh Apton, Norfolk, hidden behind the brickwork of a fireplace. Probably one of a pair (the other being St Peter) at Medieval Church of Bergh Apton or from a reredos with the 12 Apostles. Still bears much of the original paintwork. Probably hidden to escape destruction during the iconoclastic reign of Edward VI.
