Red-figured Panathenaic

Greek

Shefton Museum of Greek Art and Archaeology

425 BC

Red-figured Amphora of Panathenaic shape. Belongs to small number of red-figured Panathenaics, whose subject-matter seems to refer to the ceremonial of the Panathenaic festival. This vase is painted with a scene of 2 youths carrying sacrificial basket containing sacred barley and the utensils for the sacrifice, on its last stage to the altar. The back shows a conventional and rapidly sketched picture of 2 youths. Style places it into Polygnotan Group.
