Marco D'Oggiono (1475 - 1530)

Auckland Art Gallery New Zealand

1475 - 549

The artist, one of Leonardo da Vinci's pupils, is of particular interest because of the copies he made of his master's paintings. The panel shows the Madonna supporting the Child, who is resting on a cloth-draped ledge. The Child reclines to the right and touches His mother's breast. Behind the half-length figure of the Madonna we can see glimpses of landscape beyond a crimson-curtained window. The panel is in an excellent state of preservation and is displayed in a finely carved Renaissance frame.
